The SurfShack, designed and built by Hartman Kable, is an 8x20 foot double ended shipping container on the Washington Coast.
The exterior shell has no modifications and retains it’s original weather-proofing.
The inside is filled with all the functions one would need of a refined shelter while still retaining echoing
the simple box form.
Natural light from the glass doors on either end illuminate the interior space, which extends out onto the
150 ft. deck.
Inside, moving panels fold out of the walls to reveal a full sized bed, couch, table and bench and storage.
The shack also boasts a galley kitchen and water closet with shower.

Our product is called M.E.S.H. or modular ecologically sustainable habitat designed for off-grid coastal use. We have taken the standard 20 foot iso shipping container and recycled it into a comfortable dwelling for up to four people, complete with kitchen, bathroom, storage and even a small pool.
The product deals with several issues that are becoming essential to our continued way of life, the first is access to fresh water, and the second is affordability of sustainable housing.

We are creating a habitat that not only filters water but also captures and stores it. Rainwater is collected in 55-gallon steel drums that can also act as the habitats foundation. The fresh water pool is the main source of non-potable water, and is recycled and filtered with very basic but effective and affordable slow sand filters, and ultraviolet light. This creates a respect for what the user puts into that pool as a microcosm of what we should keep in mind of our sewer systems.

Criens, Trimo - Bonaire, Caribbean - Shipping Container Home

Bonaire a former Netherlands Antilles now a
'special municipality directly under the Netherlands, situated in the
Caribbean And on this 1260 m2 property land has been constructed a modal container home.
In the distance theres is great ocean sea-view and constant wind.
When divorced,  it is small and comfortable and easy to
build and maintain.

So I looked at those units that you see at construction sites, and
finally ended up at Trimo [http://www.trimo-modularunits.com/en/ ] in
Slovenia. The salesperson was helpful and willing to connect to my
thinking and wishes.
For 15.000 Euro I got myself two 30' units to my design, complete with
double glazed windows, door and sliding doors. Electricity, floor,
ceiling and side panelling included except the inner walls, which i
decided to do with local products - steel framing and gypsum panels.

the help from one major help [and some part timers] took place:

The property is currently for Sale with the 20' storage container and the
property land. off-grid concerning electricity and have 4 solar
panels on the roof giving me ample 220V for all the LED lights, internet
and small stuff. The refrigerator works on gas [or 220V/12V] which is
also used for cooking.

Demand for Shipping Containers

I was searching eBay looking at what shipping containers were available, and the one thing I noticed is how the pricers have increased.

An average good condition 20 ft shipping container on eBay is selling between $2500 and $3000,

There are some less expensive selections on offer at around $2000 for a 20 foot shipping container, but if  your selection is to re purpose as a shipping container home then selecting a good condition container to start with is essential.

The 40 ft Shipping Containers offer a better value for money coming at around $3000 to $3500, but your transportation cost will also be much higher.

My thoughts on the forty foot container is they are great if you have good access and lots of moveable space, otherwise their size makes them extremely difficult to move around.

One concern to take in to consideration when making a purchase is its location. You might find a really good deal on eBay for a shipping container in Florida, but having it delivered or collecting yourself when you live in Idaho will add a considerable amount to the cost.

At least with a twenty foot container a smaller truck can deliver or you can use a farm tractor or other means to move it.

Also I think with a little creation you could weld some axles and tow bar to turn a 20 Foot shipping container in to a trailer.

This would be great as a moveable work site office and accommodation.
It would also help eliminate some of the building regulations by making it a non permanent home on your land.
