Description: This project started with a client’s need for more space in their two bedroom 1950s ranch-style home. When a desire for high-design did not fit their budget, modified shipping containers were used to build an addition that would contain a 900 sq. ft. master suite. Accessed via a short hallway from the existing masonry home, the space opens to reveal a large bedroom, walk-in closets, and an open bath. The ends of the containers have been removed and filled with glazing to allow for ample natural light. The clients were able to get the space they needed while keeping a simple modern aesthetic which compliments the existing structure.

 They produced a 2 bedroom home at a green street fair in Phoenix and already the orders began to roll in. Although still not cheap at around $100,000 but demand and interest still seems readily available.

The basic 2 bedroom home was 1,280 square feet built by utilising four fourty foot shipping containers. The exterior wasn’t modified to allow people to see the home was in fact shipping containers. In the future the addition of solar panels and a shade screen are already on the cards. Inside recycled hardwood floors as well as sustainable bamboo kitchen cabinets keep the home in keeping with the green feel.

LOT-EK MDU Container ISBU

MDU is a 40ft shipping container that has been modified into a relocatable dwelling. The container accommodates several modules for various functions such as cooking, washing and sleeping. These modules sit within the container so that during transportation the MDU largely resembles any other container sitting on a ship or a dock.Once the MDU has been delivered to a site, the modules slide out of the container like extrusions and create an inner hallway in the newly created void inside the container.
