Building Lab Inc - Oakland, CA - Shipping Container Office Space

Building Lab Inc - Oakland, CA - Shipping Container Office Space

When Oakland designer and builder Stephen Schoup’s firm, building Lab Inc, grew too big for his old backyard workshop, he thought long and hard on how to increase his workspace in a sustainable way.
After much deliberation, he settled on an L-shaped shipping container office space where he could incorporate many of the leftover materials and supplies he had laying around.
The newly created backyard office balances the warehouse-style home and creates a charming courtyard in between.

UpCycle Living - Arizona - Phoenix Addition, Container Home

UpCycle Living - Arizona - Phoenix Addition, Container Home 3 x 40 ft containers

Description: This project started with a client’s need for more space in their two bedroom 1950s ranch-style home. When a desire for high-design did not fit their budget, modified shipping containers were used to build an addition that would contain a 900 sq. ft. master suite. Accessed via a short hallway from the existing masonry home, the space opens to reveal a large bedroom, walk-in closets, and an open bath. The ends of the containers have been removed and filled with glazing to allow for ample natural light. The clients were able to get the space they needed while keeping a simple modern aesthetic which compliments the existing structure.

Container Solutions India - Bangalore - Single Container Home

Container Solutions India - Bangalore - Container Home

The possibilities are enormous for customization, right from the entrance door to the shape and size of windows. In this unit, we have preferred to have plenty of ventilation owing to one big 6ft X 4ft window and two small windows(6ft X 1ft vertical window and 2ft diameter circular window). The door is the in-built container door. A sliding glass-cum-mosquito mesh door is provided as an additional door. All the windows have glass-cum-mosquito mesh panels The interior includes an air conditioner, a refrigerator, a TV, a Bunk Bed, a Wardrobe, a Kitchen table(which doubles up as a storage unit), a Sink and couple of shelves. With all these furnishings, there is still plenty of room in the container for moving around and space for a small study table. Home without a balcony is incomplete, well this container home, comes with one of its kind. Balcony adds enormous space to the container home. It is a perfect sit-out for evening tea and nothing beats the pleasure of lying idly in the hammock strung between the poles of the balcony. Apart from adding extra space, balcony acts as an insulator as well by not letting the sun hit the metal sheets directly, which considerably lowers the inside temperature during the summer time

Demand for Shipping Containers

I was searching eBay looking at what shipping containers were available, and the one thing I noticed is how the pricers have increased.

An average good condition 20 ft shipping container on eBay is selling between $2500 and $3000,

There are some less expensive selections on offer at around $2000 for a 20 foot shipping container, but if  your selection is to re purpose as a shipping container home then selecting a good condition container to start with is essential.
This nice 20 ft shipping container was on eBay

The 40 ft Shipping Containers offer a better value for money coming at around $3000 to $3500, but your transportation cost will also be much higher.

My thoughts on the forty foot container is they are great if you have good access and lots of moveable space, otherwise their size makes them extremely difficult to move around.
Imagine this trailer making its way up your driveway?

One concern to take in to consideration when making a purchase is its location. You might find a really good deal on eBay for a shipping container in Florida, but having it delivered or collecting yourself when you live in Idaho will add a considerable amount to the cost.

At least with a twenty foot container a smaller truck can deliver or you can use a farm tractor or other means to move it.
Purpose built crane on the truck
Also I think with a little creation you could weld some axles and tow bar to turn a 20 Foot shipping container in to a trailer.

This would be great as a moveable work site office and accommodation.
It would also help eliminate some of the building regulations by making it a non permanent home on your land.
be interested to here if anyone has thoughts or experience on that?

Anyway take a look, I noticed a couple of companies had over 20, 20ft shipping containers for sale!
