Infiniski Manifesto House - Curacavi Chile - Sustainable Container House

Infiniski Manifesto House - Curacavi Chile  - Sustainable Container House

The house, of 160m2 is divided in two levels and uses 3 recycled maritime containers as structure. A container cut in two parts on the first level is used as the support structure for the containers on the second level. This structure in the form a bridge creates an extra space in between the container structure, isolated with thermo glass panels. As a consequence with only 90m2 worth of container, the project generates a total 160m2, maximizing and reducing significantly the use of extra building materials. This structure in the form of a bridge, responds to the bioclimatic needs of the house- Form follows Energy – and offers an effective natural ventilation system. It also helps to take full advantage of the house´s natural surroundings, natural light and landscape views. Designed by James and Mau.

Upcycle Living - Phoenix - Container Home

Upcycle Living - Phoenix - Container Home

They produced a 2 bedroom home at a green street fair in Phoenix and already the orders began to roll in. Although still not cheap at around $100,000 but demand and interest still seems readily available.

The basic 2 bedroom home was 1,280 square feet built by utilising four fourty foot shipping containers. The exterior wasn’t modified to allow people to see the home was in fact shipping containers. In the future the addition of solar panels and a shade screen are already on the cards. Inside recycled hardwood floors as well as sustainable bamboo kitchen cabinets keep the home in keeping with the green feel.

Studio HT - Shipping Container House - Colorado

Studio HT  - Shipping Container House - Colorado
This project questions the need for excessive space and challenges occupants to be efficient. Two shipping containers saddlebag a taller common space that connects local rock outcroppings to the expansive mountain ridge views. The containers house sleeping and work functions while the center space provides entry, dining, living and a loft above. The loft deck invites easy camping as the platform bed rolls between interior and exterior. The project is planned to be off-the-grid using solar orientation, passive cooling, green roofs, pellet stove heating and photovoltaics to create electricity.

Is This The Best Bug Out Shelter?

 Homestead Launch

What about the idea of using shipping containers as a retreat or “bug out shelter?”
As it turns out, shipping containers offer some distinct advantages in being used for this kind of housing.
First of all, the containers themselves are comparatively inexpensive, when compared to many other building blocks you can use.
They also provide a handful of advantages as a result of their durability. Because shipping containers are made to be stacked and make trans-oceanic voyages, they can certainly withstand a good deal of abuse. This is extremely important for people looking to have a container home shelter as a “getaway spot.”
My friend Dan recently put together a pretty cool guide for people considering the idea. His guide on using shipping containers as bug out shelters walks people through a series of questions that need to be asked (and answered!) before undertaking a project like this. Building locations, financing, foundations, and much more.
If interested, check out his guide here.
