An affordable housing complex built from a dozen old shipping containers was unveiled in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The 12 shipping containers on Alexander Street near Jackson Avenue have been converted into apartments by the Atira Women's Resource Society, which bought a lot on the block in 2009. The first shipping container was dropped on the lot at the end of November, and each unit cost $82,500 to build.

The 320-square-foot containers have been stacked three high and feature 290 square feet of living space. Each unit has its own private bathroom, kitchen and in-suite laundry. The homes also have floor-to-ceiling windows, and each floor is linked by an external staircase.

The SurfShack, designed and built by Hartman Kable, is an 8x20 foot double ended shipping container on the Washington Coast.
The exterior shell has no modifications and retains it’s original weather-proofing.
The inside is filled with all the functions one would need of a refined shelter while still retaining echoing
the simple box form.
Natural light from the glass doors on either end illuminate the interior space, which extends out onto the
150 ft. deck.
Inside, moving panels fold out of the walls to reveal a full sized bed, couch, table and bench and storage.
The shack also boasts a galley kitchen and water closet with shower.

Naturally, That benchmark has Become a desirable location, and the local architect Sebastian Irarrázaval has joined other architects in building houses That respond to the challenging topography. His latest, constructed out of shipping containers, has been dubbed the Caterpillar House (House Track), for the way its elongated volumes tilt up and down the steeply sloping site.
The house uses raw steel and exposed concrete in the same direct way Irarrázaval employed them for a design school I built in 2010, at Chile's Pontifical Catholic University.
